Adjusting After Being Told You’re Wrong

I never considered myself a rules guy until other officials started asking me rules questions. Many of the questions I was asked made me dig into the rulebook even further, which helped enhance my knowledge of the rulebook. I did not become knowledgable on lacrosse rules by just studying the rulebook though. I learned a painful lesson early on in my career that it pays dividends down the road to accept when I am completely wrong on a rule.

Push with Possession: When is a push a not a push?

The push with possession call: it is one of the most important and misunderstood calls in lacrosse. But it appears as if pushes with possession are a different story. Why do so many go seemingly uncalled? A relatively soft nudge in the back that pushes a player out of bounds gets a flag, while a hard shove from behind in the middle of the field gets a free pass.  Coaches and fans start yelling “You gotta call it both ways ref!” So when is a push a push. What gives?  Four factors come into play when determining whether a push really is a push:  the rule, the principle of advantage/disadvantage (TPOAD), location and level of play. NFHS & US Lacrosse Youth Tests Online!

Unfortunately there have been a number of issues with the US Lacrosse tests being housed on the Arbiter website. We have placed both online tests to the ALO website  and will handle sending passing scores to US Lacrosse while they figure out their technical issues. Continue reading

New Youth Officials Training Class January 19

ALO is pleased to announce training dates for the Spring 2014 season.   We will host a Training Class for new officials on January 19 at the at the Decatur Recreation Center located at 231 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030.  The class will run from  9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The class is one of a number of steps required to become a certified US Lacrosse official.  You can view the requirements for becoming an official at the end of this post.
