The Value of a Pre-Game Conference

For most lacrosse officials, you arrive at the field twenty minutes before the game.  It is imperative that you and your crew get on the same page quickly. A  well officiated lacrosse game is managed by a team of officials, not two or three individuals doing their own thing.  The two things that hold a crew together are solid mechanics and communication.  I am a sheet guy.  I hand out a printed pre-game to my crew that covers everything I want to review.

Now is the Time: Pre-Season Preparation

day-oneFootball has wrapped up, basketball is winding down, the holidays are a blur and BOOM:  Lacrosse season is here.  It sneaks up on us every year. But being ready for the season is key to having a successful year as an official.  If you want be regarded as a top official, now is the time to prepare.  As of today there are only 60 days until the first game and you have a lot to do. Hustle

My high school coach had a saying: “I don’t care if you make a mistake. So long as you make it going a million miles an hour.” He could not get angry at us if we screwed up as long as we were hustling and running our hardest. This same principle applies to officiating at every level of the game. If coaches see you lazily walking to your position they will make several assumptions. One of the assumptions is that the official on the game does not care about the game. Once that thought is in the coach’s mind, the official will have a difficult time extricating that assumption.
